Report

* We have received reports that container ship MSC BALTIC III (IMO: 9241475) experienced an engine failure and subsequently ran aground in challenging weather conditions whilst in a position off the west coast of Newfoundland, Canada on 15 February 2025.

* It is reported that the vessel currently remains aground on a rocky shoreline at Wild Cove, Canada, and the crew have been safely evacuated from the vessel by a Canadian SAR helicopter.

* Weather conditions in the remote area of the grounding remaining challenging, with strong winds, freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall in the region. It has therefore proved difficult to assess the extent of damage to the vessel at this time, but photographs of the stricken vessel indicate that it has sustained significant hogging to the starboard side of the hull. There are currently no reports of loss overboard of any containers stowed on board the vessel.

* It is reported that shipowners have entered into a Salvage Agreement with professional salvors to provide salvage assistance to the vessel, once the weather conditions allow, and we are seeking confirmation of the terms upon which those services may be rendered. However, it is reported that it will take an appreciable time to muster the required salvage vessels and equipment given the remote location of the casualty.

* If Salvage services are provided under LOF terms, Salvage Security will be required from all Cargo Interests on termination of the Salvage services, and we are likely to be able to assist in that regard. Salvage Security provided by WKW is acceptable to the Council of Lloyd’s and widely preferred by professional Salvors.

* It is anticipated that General Average will be declared. If so, General Average security will be required prior to the delivery of cargo and we are also likely to be able to assist in that regard.

* Recovery issues may also arise in the event of loss or damage to cargo stowed on board the vessel, we have Surveyors on standby to assist in this regard.

* We therefore recommend that you contact us urgently if you are concerned with any cargo on board this vessel so that we can immediately start taking steps to protect your interests.
