SOPHIA Z

* We have received reports that bulk carrier SOPHIA Z experienced a steering gear system failure and ran aground at Umuryeri point in the Istanbul Strait, Turkey on 14 October 2023.

* The vessel could not be refloated under its own power. Consequently, the vessel was later refloated with the assistance of local Coastal Safety tugs contracted under Turkish Open Form terms and was taken under tow to Yenikapi anchorage.

* The extent of damage to the vessel is unclear at this time, pending inspection.

* It is possible that General Average/Salvage and associated recovery issues may arise as a result of this casualty.

* We therefore recommend that you contact us if you are concerned with any cargo on board this vessel so that we can immediately start taking steps to protect your interests.
